An AI report includes twenty references. It looks more reliable than an answer with no links, but you still need to know whether each source supports the statement attached to it. Counting citations does not answer that question.
and both offer research tools. We compare documented capabilities and propose an evaluation method here. We have not run a controlled comparison of their research modes. The review examples below are illustrative.
Define the comparison
Perplexity Research combines searching, reading and source synthesis. ChatGPT deep research supports source-based reports and a research plan you can review.
Record the mode when testing them. A short search answer and a lengthy research run are different assignments as well as different products. Keep the date, available access and sources you allowed.
Your choice may depend on what happens to the report next. Do you need initial orientation or a document someone must audit? For an auditable document, each consequential claim needs a traceable path to evidence.
Ask a bounded question
An instruction to research the best tools encourages a generic overview. Instead, try: “Compare three tools for reviewing documents in a small team. Use official documentation for features and pricing, separate verified information from opinion, and identify what you cannot verify”.
Specify the country, reference date and requirements that affect your decision. Mention essential file sizes or integrations before research starts. Otherwise, an answer may be broadly correct but unsuitable for your situation.
Do not supply a preferred conclusion. Asking a tool to confirm your favorite option encourages a search for supporting arguments.
Audit claims rather than bibliographies
Choose the five statements most likely to change your decision. Open each source and locate the relevant passage. Check whether it covers the same version, plan, country and date.
Mark each claim as supported, partly supported, contradicted or unverifiable. A feature can exist without being included in your plan. If a source will not open, retain the uncertainty. Do not count it automatically as either a false statement or a successful check.
For a hypothetical example, a report says a plan costs twenty euros including tax, while its source lists twenty US dollars. The link exists but does not support the sentence. Preserve the source’s currency and region, then check the applicable final price.
A reputable domain does not verify every sentence
explains that its source labels rate domains rather than individual pages. That distinction helps when auditing any system. Recognizing a website does not prove that the cited passage supports a particular conclusion.
Look for independence too. Three articles repeating one announcement are not three independent checks. Use documentation for product capabilities and retain the author and conditions of a personal experience.
When sources disagree, investigate before choosing the more convenient answer. They may describe different dates or products.
Decide which result is useful
Compare how many important claims you could verify and the time required to correct the report. Record omissions as well: an answer can avoid errors by leaving out a decisive requirement.
Do not force incompatible problems into one score. A broken source, omitted limitation and unclear paragraph need different remedies. Choose the tool that helps you reach a defensible decision in the work you regularly perform.
